A lack of gaskets here can seriously wear the cam keeper plate slot, if the cam pulls back excesively hard against the teeth angle, whilst turning an entraped drive gear.
When correctly instaled, the gear should turn or rock slightly, with a large flat bladed screwdriver engaged in the gear slot
